Rogue sighed. Today is one of the last days they had left. In 9 more days they have to get back home. She watched herself in the bathroom mirror. The dress Jean has given her flattered her in every way. Which worried her to no end. Scott had read the letter she wrote late a few nights ago. She put the final touches on her makeup and stood up straight. She had a honey tint now thanks to the surfing and sunbathing she’d done with Scott. She opened the door and inhaled, waiting for the reaction she’d get.
" Oh wow!" Kitty exclaimed.
Rogue smiled shyly, feeling rather naked now. Her brother was talking with Scott out on the balcony.
" Scott’s gonna drop dead," Kitty said.
Kitty put her arm around Rogue’s shoulders and they walked out to the balcony.
" Are we like gonna get out of here or what?" Kitty asked.
Both guys smiled at them.
" No," Kurt joked. " We’re gonna sit here like dorks.."
Rogue rolled her eyes, " You goober."
Scott got up and Kurt followed him. As Kurt went past the doorway he turned on his inducer to look human.
The gathering wasn’t at all packed. Alex waved and ran over, smiling. Rogue took this time to go get some punch. Gentle winds blew that night. But strong enough to make Rogue wish she had her hair up inside of loose. She sipped watching Kitty and Kurt talking with Alex and Scott. Scott would occasionally look her way and smile. She walked over slowly to join them. Her mind was back at the conversation they had the night before. How Scott told her about how Jean was, how she wouldn’t let him get close. After meeting Duncan she stopped coming to his room in the middle of the night. Rogue told him about that drunk and what happened. Scott said he understood, scars are hard to get past. He’d had his own from being a runaway. Sometimes you had to do un-natural things to get food and money.
He put his arm around her waist, sending her back to reality. His hand was warm and a little sweaty. Alex laughed and went on about Scott's great surfing. Rogue and Kitty smiled at each other. This felt so surreal. Alex saw his girlfriend and said he’d catch them later.
" Man I don’t want to leave!" Kitty exclaimed.
Rogue popped her neck as Kurt wiped off his forehead.
" It’s nice here, but you aren’t wearing a fur coat," Kurt said.
Rogue found herself mouthing the words to " Color Blind" for some reason.
" Hey, we’ll catch you guys later tonight," Kitty said smirking.
Rogue smiled, still letting the words play in her head.
" Have Fun," Scott said.
" Yeah," Rogue said.
The two ran off with Kurt saying something about a comb. Rogue sat down at a table and he followed suit.
" I keep on forgetting that this is real," Rogue said.
" I know the feeling," Scott said. " Have I told you that you look beautiful tonight?"
Rogue felt color come to her cheeks.
" No," she said putting a hand on her cheek. " Thanks. You look great too."
" I guess we should think of what to say when we return to the mansion," Scott said.
" If they are our friends, we won’t have to say anything," Rogue said.
Sometimes she wished she could read minds. Scott had a nervous air to him that night.
" Remember how you wrote that one letter?" He asked.
" Yeah," Rogue said. " You’re gonna write one?"
" Why not," He said.
Rogue smiled softly at him.
" You ever heard the song ‘Color Blind’?" She asked.
" Yeah. From ‘Cruel Intentions’," He said.
" It’s been going through my head almost all night," Rogue said. " I guess it’s because why did it take me this long to figure everything out?"
" Maybe you just were ignoring it. Sometimes I think if I ignore something long enough it’ll go away. But there’s always that one thing that refuses to be ignored," Scott said.
" Cheers to that," Rogue said.
They were quiet for a few moments. Probably getting a grasp on the situation.
" I don’t think I was trying to ignore it," Rogue said. " I just couldn’t believe it. I mean, Jean’s been like yours for a long time. I always assumed it would stay that way. I had no idea she would choose someone else."
Scott reached over and took one of Rogue’s hands.
" Hey I got an idea," Rogue said. " How about a late night swim?"
He looked at her funny for a moment.
" It’ll be fun," Rogue said.
" Sure," Scott said.
Rogue smirked and got up. Scott followed her off the deck and onto the beach.
" You’re insane," he said.
Rogue took off her shoes and pointed to his.
" Oh come on," she laughed. " We did this earlier."
He shook his head and took off his shoes and socks. Rogue ran into the water laughing. He was half way in when she grabbed him and pulled him under. He gave a yelp and she smiled. He came up to the surface and glared at her. She swam over to him and put her arms around his neck.
" You’re evil," he laughed.
She smirked, " Only when I want to be."
He smoothed her hair back and she sighed. They lean in and kissed for a few moments, or at least until the crowd clapped. They turned to see a few of the other partiers clapping. Rogue laughed with Scott.
" Ugh," Scott said. " We should get out of here soon as possible."
" Yeah," Rogue said.
They worked on getting out of the water and the crowd thinned. Once back to their room they found Kurt and Kitty watching TV. They had ordered Room Service.
" What about your room?" Rogue asked.
" Hey, we’re bonding here remember?" Kitty asked.
Rogue laughed and grabbed a towel.
" Well, save us some food will ya?" Scott asked.
Rogue grabbed her pj’s and went into the bathroom. She changed quickly so Scott could get outta his wet clothes. She almost told him to join her in there. But she didn’t. She walked out and Scott went in. She exchanged a look with him as she passed.
She then joined the two on the bed and Kitty offered her a soda. Rogue smiled and took it. Scott came out soon after. Rogue moved over to make room for him.
" Here’s a site for everyone," Kurt laughed.
" Yea," Kitty said. " Everyone would get the wrong idea I bet."
Rogue smirked at Scott, who shook his head.
" I swear I don’t know you two," he chuckled.
Kitty shoved some cake in his face and giggled. Scott wiped it off and sighed.
" Put your food where your mouth is," Kitty laughed.
Rogue wiped the rest of the icing off his face and couldn’t help but laugh herself.
" You know something?" Kurt asked. " This actually feels normal."
" Normal?" Scott asked.
" Ja," Kurt said. " The four of us just hanging out."
" He’s got a point," Rogue said.
" I’ve never thought of it that way," Scott said.
Rogue poked him in the ribs, he looked over at her. She smirked. She was up to something. Scott just couldn’t put his finger on it. Kitty grabbed a brush, and Rogue looked at her.
" Your hair is driving me nuts," Kitty said grabbing a hairband from her purse. " Sit up so I can fix it."
Rogue did so, and grumbled. She happened to like the dreadlocks the seawater made. Kitty and the rest still watched TV, talking and eating. She managed to put Rogue’s hair into a French Braid. The tail reached a little past her waist.
" Can I lay back down now?" Rogue asked.
" Yeah," Kitty said.
Rogue lean back onto the pillows again. She rested her head against Scott’s shoulder.
She had no idea when she fell asleep. But when she woke up, it was just her and Scott in the room.
" They left about an hour ago," Scott said turning off the TV.
" How long have I been out?" She asked.
" About three hours," he said.
Rogue could swear his eyes seemed to glow in the dark. She reached over to turn on the light. She almost fell off the bed in the process. The room flood with the pale light and she relaxed on the bed again. It was still pretty dark outside. She blew at the few strands of white hair in front of her face.
" Have you slept any?" She asked.
" Not really," he said.
Rogue sighed, " I used to sing myself to sleep when I was younger."
" Did it work?" he asked.
" Sometimes," She said. " But this is a different situation isn’t it?"
" Yeah," he said.
" Okay," She said. " You’ve been surfing a lot with Alex. Maybe your back’s just outta sync or something."
She made him move forward some as she put herself behind him. Scott glanced back at her for a moment.
" Trust me," Rogue said. " I know what I’m doing."
" Come to my parlor, said the spider to the fly," Scott said.
She chuckled lightly then put her hands onto his shoulders. Her bracelet winked back at her as she massaged his shoulders. Scott leaned his head forward some as she did this. She focused completely on the massage. She didn’t want to get it wrong. His back was full of kinks and knots. She adjusted her legs so she could get his lower back better. She had to choose her pressure carefully. She knew all his weaknesses, since she’d taken his powers and memories a lot. It gives an unfair advantage to her. His skin was getting hotter, she noticed. She could almost feel his heart beating though his back.
" Okay, you need to lay down on your stomach. It’s time to re align your back," she said.
He did so, without saying anything. Rogue wondered what was going through his head. Maybe this was having a different effect on him. If he didn’t enjoy it he wouldn’t have gone along with it. She gently sat down on his butt, hoping she wouldn’t crush him. After rubbing her hands together she went on with the process of the alignment. He didn’t say anything, when usually one yelps with the pressure. She went back to massaging his back.
" You do this a lot don’t you?" He asked.
" Sometimes," Rogue said. " How’s the back?"
" Much better," he said, sounding tired.
Rogue could now see the faint scars on his back. She gave him a gentle one over and moved off him. He then sat up and you could hear his back pop again.
" Is that a good thing?" He asked.
" It happens," She said.
She pulled back the covers and he slid under them.
" You think the Prof would find a way for you to see colors again?" She asked.
He made himself comfortable as he thought about it.
" Sometimes I do miss it. Other time I just imagine what colors are. Everything’s in shades of red and black," he said.
Rogue hadn’t yet made herself comfortable. She was sitting up, her lap underneath the covers. After a moment she lay down and Scott let her use him has a pillow. She curled up with him as he put his arms around her.
He stayed like that until she drifted off to sleep. He got out of her arms slowly, not wanting to wake her. She mumbled something and rolled over.. He went to his dresser and picked up the composition book he placed there earlier. On the first few pages was Rogue’s letter. She had used purple that night. Jean probably wouldn’t of thought of it, an exchange of letters. Well not of this kind. He sat down in one of the few chairs in the room. He just randomly picked a pen from Rogue’s collection. Luckily, it was a color fairly easy to see. Dark blue, with a touch of glitter in it.
This is odd, but hey I’m not complaining. It’s my turn to watch you sleep. How you’re able to sleep is beyond me. We’ve talked about Jean. She started shying away almost two months before the Duncan brush off. Did you ever notice how she looked at you that one Christmas? I think that Blue sweater pissed her off like crazy. I still wear it when the weather permits. She gave us the death look before she left to visit her family.
I know she’s trying to get over this. I almost have to remind myself. It’s unbelievable. The way things turned out. All this time I’ve known you have been great. Even when you hated me. I can’t remember if I ever thanked you for saving me that first time. You’ve always been there.
Not many understand how it is to be a runaway. I know that you were one for only awhile. Me it was years. I had no clue how to control this deadly gift. But you already know these things.
Kurt’s told me about how you felt, even when I knew it myself. I even tried to ignore it. But I knew when we went searching for Angel. Just that look on your face in the Café. You were hoping I wasn’t talking about believing in Angels. You wanted to hear me confess about liking you. Trust me, I would of. But it wasn’t the place. Everything just feels right around you. Spending this trip with you has been the greatest thing. I wonder how the rest will go.
I’ve realized just how jumbled this looks. And I know that I’m smirking. You give great massages by the way. I was fighting sleep not even a minute into it. It’s even more odd how I miss you even when I’m a foot away. You’re like a drug too. We both know how these nights are getting more difficult. I’m telling you now, when the time comes, you’ll never be compared to anyone else.
Scott re-capped the pen and looked at his writing. His print was relaxed and even. He closed the book and placed it into the nightstand. That’s when he noticed how long he’s been writing. It’s taken him almost two hours to write it. He sat down onto the bed, and watched her sleep. He looked out the balcony doors. The curtains weren’t sheer, but you could see the moon through them. He sighed, letting his face go into his hands. Suddenly he felt alone, even though Rogue was just a foot away. His mind went back to the times before Jean brushed him off. All those midnight visits. At the beginning, He would always see Jean doing those things. He’d do things to Jean. Near the end, after Rogue joined, it turned. He’d see Rogue, not Jean in those meetings. It felt like betrayal. But it wasn’t. He wasn’t ever Jean’s official boyfriend. He wouldn’t give Jean what she wanted. Duncan must of.
He felt hands on his shoulders, and he sat up. Slim legs appeared around his. She put her head on his shoulder and sighed. She let one arm go to his waist while the other stayed around his other shoulder. He glanced at her, her mouth moved but he couldn’t hear the words. His heart beat thundered loudly in his ears. He didn’t want this now. No matter what that little voice was saying. He ignored the noise of his pulse and he could finally hear her.
" Are you okay?" She asked.
" Not really," he said.
He couldn’t decide if it was freezing or burning hot in the room.
" I know the feeling," She said. " You know we aren’t going to get any sleep. Unless something gives."
Scott felt like he was running a massive fever. He was starting to sweat. One of her hands went to his face and made him turn towards her. She kissed him sweetly, with something else in the back of it.
" You are aware of what you’re asking," he said.
" Nothing that you haven’t thought about yourself," she said.
He looked out at the muted moon and closed his eyes. He felt dizzy now. He kissed her this time, putting everything on the table. Times like this he wanted to see her like she really was. Not some black shaded red person. Things he had once thought about he let now happen. Sometimes being nervous gives you an advantage.
